Recessive gene

Member of a pair of genes (an allele) that cannot express itself in the presence of its more dominant allele; it is expressed only when both genes are recessive (the homozygous state).

For example, the genes for many inherited disorders are recessive. The disease is only expressed if two copies of the disease gene are present e.g. cystic fibrosis.
