Oncogene

A modified gene that is able to produce a malignant change in cells; several have been identified in human tissue as potential causes of cancer. Researchers are attempting to isolate anti-oncogenes that suppress tumours and may be used in the treatment of cancer.

Certain oncogene precursors called prot-oncogenes, play a role in normal growth and development; if they are damaged or mutated, cancer may result.
