Breast cancer

Early detection

Because early detection of breast cancer makes the disease easier to treat (diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer in the early stage results in a cure over 90% of the time), there are many recommendations for regular self examination. However, the value of self examination remains somewhat controversial and can result in increased anxiety and an increase in breast biopsies.

Currently, in Australia, breast cancer screening by mammogram, is actively offered to women between the ages of 49 and 69. However women aged 40-49 and those aged 70 and over may participate in the screening program. For more information on breast cancer screening go to: BreastScreen Australia.
