Gene

Basic unit of inheritance, basic unit of genetic material made up usually of DNA; that part of a chromosome that is considered to be a single unit of heredity and that codes for the production of a specific polypeptide chain of a protein.

In humans and many other animals, genes occur as pairs, one from each parent. These gene pairs control hereditary traits and are located in the same position on a pair of chromosomes.
